Saregama Carvaan

(Sample Project)

Challenge: Saregama Caravan wants to create a film for Father’s Day. Write the narrative in Hindi/Urdu.

Solution: This story is about the Mehra's who bond over their love of Bollywood songs through various ages and stages of life.

Role(s): Research, Campaign Ideation, Creative Conceptualization, Scriptwriting

Narrative Film Script

(The scene starts with a focus on the Mehra’s nameplate outside a flat in Old Prabhadevi area. Reflective of the Mehra’s colourful personality, this nameplate is shown to be handwritten, with three handprints right below it. This is when we introduce the Mehra’s to the world)

(Voiceover starts)

Yeh Kahani Mehra Parivaar ki hai. Mumbai mein rehne waale yeh 3 ki family, dikhti toh normal hai, but haqeekat mein, hai iss shabdh se koso door. Aaye dekhe;

(Voiceover ends)

Mom: (shoving the report card under Mehra Ji’s nose) Yeh dekhiye aapke bete ki kartoote. Pura waqt ghar par khelta rahega par waqt aane par teachers ke saamne ek poem dhang se nahi bol sakta. Ab aap hi kuch samjhaye isse.

Dad: (takes the report card from her, reads the teachers’ comments, and then looks at his son for a moment. And then, all of a sudden)

Ay Ina Mina Dika, Daai, Daamo Nika

Maaka naaka naaka, chika pika rika

(teary eyed son starts laughing)

Chalo beta, ab mere saath repeat karo,

Ina Mina Dika, Daai, Daamo Nika

(son repeats it)

Maaka naaka naaka, chika pika rika

(son repeats it)

Ina Mina Dika Dika de daai daamo nika

Maaka Naaka Maaka Naaka Chika Pika Rola Rika

Rumpum Posh Rumpum Posh

(Dad recites this super-fast, making his son laugh and jump up and down with joy.)

Mom: Aapka kuch nahi hosakta (laughs a little and leaves)

Dad: Beta agar yeh gaana aagaya tumhe toh tum koi bhi poem seekh sakte ho, okay? (smiles and wipes off his son’s tears while repeating the song)

(Fast forward a few years, scene changes to the time when the son is accepted at a foreign university and is packing his stuff in cartons. Mom is helping him pack but is unhappy about it, with an occasional tear rolling down her cheeks every few seconds. That is when Dad makes a grand entrance, to save the day.)

Dad: (rolling on a large, brand new suitcase, he starts singing)

Zindagi ek safar hai suhana
Yahan kal kya ho kisne jaana
Arey o leiyo leiyo, oleiyo leiyo
Oleiyo leiyo, oleiyo leiyo
Oleiyo leiyo, oleiyo leiyo

(Son joins him and together, they have a group hug and console mom)

(The next scene is a leap into the future, with the son married and his wife pregnant with their child, and his parents, much older than before, but still childlike at heart.

Mom enters the living room in a brand-new saree her daughter-in-law bought for her)

Mom: Yeh dekho nayi saree, meri bahu laayi hai mere liye (showing off, she twirls around)

(Son looks up from his laptop, gets up and starts singing)

O Hasina Julfon Vaalee Jaanejahan

(A very pregnant daughter-in- law enters the room and on seeing her husband dance with his mom, she laughs. Dad keeps his newspaper aside and dances lightly with his daughter in law, which makes for a picture-perfect moment)

Dhundhatee Hain Kaafir Aankhe Kiska Nishaan
Mehfil Mehfil Ae Shama Phirtee Ho Kaha

(Cut to, a new member has joined the Mehra Parivaar, who goes by the name – Siya.

Now that the baton of being doting grandparents has been passed to the older Mehra couple, Siya’s grandparents leave no stone unturned in recounting embarrassing stories about their college life. Here, Siya, a teenager, has returned quite early from college.)

Grandfather: Sia beta tum itni jaldi aagayi college se?

Siya: Haan Dadu, classes khatam hogayi. Isiliye jaldi aagayi!

Grandmother: Beta phir toh iss maamle mein tum bilkul bhi apne Dadu pe nahi gayi ho. Unhe toh aisi College ke baad waha rehna bohot pasand tha, ladkiyan jo hoti thi waha.

Siya’s Dad: (laughing) oh toh Dad woh the, kya kehte hai Siya?

Siya: oooh, Dadu Player the!

Grandfather: Arey nahi beta. Player toh mein kabhi tha nahi, fark sirf itna tha ki Ladkiya hum pe marti thi aur hum tumhari Dadi pe!

Siya: (laughs) Waah waah, kya baat hai!

Grandmother: Aisa kuch nahi hai! Inhe apni haseeno se waqt hi kaha milta tha, huh.

Siya’s Dad: Phir toh Papa pe ek hi gaana laagu hota hai

(making eye contact with his mom and singing together)

Bachna Ae Haseeno,

Lo Mein Aagaya

(Grandfather joins in grudgingly and Siya dances around)

(Cut to the time when Siya returns from a party and a discussion around the OG dance party songs thus ensues)

Siya: Dadu kuch bhi bolo, but OG party song toh ‘Apni toh Jaise Taise’ hi hai.

(Father and son look at each other, surprised that Siya knows the song.

But they’re in for a huge surprise when Siya plays ‘Aapka Kya hoga Janabe Ali-Dhanno’- a remake of the original one.)

Siya’s Dad: (Laughs and hits pause on the song) Beta, jisse tum ‘OG’ kehti hona woh toh Remake hai. OG toh humaare zamaane mein hua karte the.

Grandfather: Beta agar Kishore Kumar aur Prakash Mehra nahi hote toh tumhara yeh ‘OG Party song’ bhi nahi hota!

(Siya’s Dad starts thumping his fist against the table, in tune with the original Apni toh Jaise Taise.

This is followed by a jamming session between the father-son duo with Siya looking confused and slightly done with them.)

Apni toh Jaise Tese, Thodi Aise ya waise,

Apni toh Jaise Tese, Thodi Aise ya waise, kat jayegi

Aapka kya hoga janab-e-ali, aapka kya hoga?

(Fast forward to a few months later. This scene is a sombre one because Siya’s Dad gets a promotion but it is for an overseas position. Everybody’s really happy but there is a whiff of sadness, much akin to the time when their son had to go to University.)

Siya’s Dad: Papa, offer toh achi hai but US mein posting hai, toh…. (he trails off)

Dad: (looking at his wife and putting on a brave face) Arey toh kya hua beta, tumhe itni achi opportunity mili hai. Agar tumlog ko (looking at his daughter-in-law and son) koi aitraaz nahi hai, toh dil se jao. Humara kya hai, ab hum budhe hogaye hai, hum apna dekh lenge. (turns away to leave)

Siya’s Dad: Nahi papa, aisa nahi hai (is cut off by his mom)

Grandmother: Papa aur mein yaha pe manage karlenge. Tumlog jao, ek nayi shuruaat karo. We’re so proud of you, Beta. (with tears in her eyes, she strokes her son’s cheek)

(To ease some of the tension, Siya does something she’s never done before, but it was about time anyway. She sings, willingly, for the first time)

Siya: Papa kehte hai bada naam karega,

        beta humaara aisa kaam karega

(drags her grandfather back into the room before he exits; he joins halfheartedly and the pain is forgotten momentarily)

(Siya's grandfather has secretly marked the days to his son’s departure. He realises that he has a month to go before his son leaves. But things have not been the same since his promotion announcement; he doesn’t sing anymore, and his eyes have lost their usual twinkle.

Meanwhile, Siya has been upto something to revive the spark between her dad and Dadu. She realises that Father’s Day is approaching fast and decides to do something about their unequivocal love for one thing- Old School Bollywood Songs.

Cut to Father’s Day, T-25 days for them to move to the States. Things between the Father-son duo have been rocky to say the least. Conversations have been very few, if at all, and forced.

They are having breakfast in complete silence when they hear the first two lines from this song play and immediately go to the living room to check where the sound is coming from)

Tera Jaisa Yaar Kaha

Kahan aisa yaarana

(Their eyes lay on a very unique object- Red in colour, with traces of the past but in step with the latest technology- Saregama Carvaan Karaoke)

Yaad karegi Duniya

Tera Mera Afsana

Meri zindagi sawaari

Mujhko gale lagake

(The father-son duo break out of their trance and hug it out, acknowledging each other’s tears and fears. Siya joins them for the hug.)

Siya: Happy Father’s Day Papa and Dadu! Yeh (pointing towards Saregama Carvaan) aap dono ke liye, ab jitna mann chahiye ga lo, full Kishore Kumar style haha!

Baitha diya falak pe

Mujhe khaak se uthaake

(The father-son duo showers their angel with hugs and kisses. Siya helps set up Carvaan with HDMI for them to do what they do best- jam to Old Bollywood tunes with their loved ones!)

Yaara teri yaari ko

Maine toh khuda maana

Yaad karegi duniya

Tera mera afsaana

(Voiceover starts)
